Together with her son, Daniel de la Vega, president of the firm, she continues to expand her empire, representing prestigious developments and leveraging Sotheby’s renowned reputation to position properties in the international luxury market.
Aside from her professional success, Mayi is an avid art collector and brand ambassador, dedicating time to promote Florida’s East Coast as an international cultural destination. As a Cuban immigrant in pursuit of the American Dream, her commitment to the community is reflected in her years of philanthropic work, including roles on various boards. Looking back, what do you think are qualities or skills that most influenced your path?
Vision, resilience, my ability to connect with people, and a commitment to continually expanding my emotional intelligence have guided me throughout my career and continue to drive me forward. In 2008, in the midst of one of the country’s worst economic crashes, I jumped at the opportunity to acquire the Sotheby’s real estate franchise in South Florida. I recognized early on the area’s potential to evolve into a global epicenter. Despite the economic downturn, I was confident that South Florida would emerge as a premier destination for real estate. We took calculated risks and invested in building a strong brand presence, believing that the Sotheby’s name combined with our local expertise would resonate deeply. Along the way there have been countless challenges that have shaped my approach and strengthened my resolve. Commitment and resilience have helped position our company as the leading luxury real estate brokerage that it is today.
Navigating this industry requires more than just business acumen—it demands emotional intelligence. Real estate at times can be a high-tension business. Being able to communicate with clients and colleagues effectively, manage relationships and stressful energy in a positive manner, and successfully understand and collaborate with those around me has been invaluable.
I also have been fortunate to build an incredible sphere of influence who have helped me achieve success, both professionally and personally. I have brilliant and dedicated team members on all fronts who truly put passion into what they do. I could never do this alone.

If you had to identify one experience in your life that made you stronger, what would it be and why?
My family fled Cuba when I was three years old and I remember watching my parents start over with nothing. Their unwavering strength to build a better life for our family really shaped who I am today. I would tag along with my mother as she cleaned offices and remember my dad going door to door selling vacuums. Their work ethic and discipline instilled a drive in me to succeed, and believe that anything can be achieved through hard work and a positive mindset.
What is it like to focus on the luxury and ultra-luxury sector in one of the most important cities in the world, like Miami? What do you have to keep in mind?
There is no better place in the world to live and do business than Florida’s East Coast. As the area has evolved into a global hub, it has attracted talent, new businesses, culture, and significant investment from around the world. To sustain this growth, we must continue to innovate and prioritize development of infrastructure, enhance educational opportunities, and maintain a business-friendly environment.
What do you think was the key to ONE Sotheby’s International Realty being the leading luxury real estate agency on the east coast of Florida?
